The Easiest Way to Talk About Jesus by Spencer Bernard I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done. I will be filled with joy because of you. I will sing praises to your name, O Most High. - Psalm 9:1-2 NLT Budgets . . . ugh. My wife, Lisa, and I budget our money. We have two kids in college. We don’t pay for all of it, but we help. We can only do this if we budget. Oh, one more thing. We don’t like to budget. In the past, the budgeting approach that’s worked for us is the Dave Ramsey cash/envelope system. But using those envelopes is about as much fun as cleaning the gutters (sorry, Dave). When you fill the car with gas, you can’t pay cash at the pump. Forget online shopping. Hey Amazon, can you break a $20? This time we wanted a new way, and we found it. There’s an app that combines the cash/envelope system with a smartphone called “Goodbudget.” It’s a “virtual envelope” system. It makes sense to us, and we use it. Does it make budgeting fun? Well, let’s not go overboard, but it works for us. (I bet right now some of you are curious about “Goodbudget.” Maybe you’ve stopped reading this and are looking at it. I’ll wait . . . .) If you asked me technical questions about the app, I probably wouldn’t know the answer. We don’t use all the features. I’m not an expert, so I’d refer you to their website. All I can tell you is it works for us. It keeps us on a budget, so we have money for our priorities. And that’s the easiest way to talk about Jesus. . . . Huh? Tell people about the difference He’s made in your life. If they ask questions you don’t know, no big deal. Refer them to a knowledgeable source you trust. However, if you stick to your story with Jesus, you’ll never be stumped. No one can argue with you. Your story is your story. Your story has power. And that’s the easiest way.

This Sunday is our pledge day for Kingdom Builders 2019! Let’s pray, seek the Spirit’s leading, and then walk by faith as we consider all the people that could be reached from here to the “ends of the earth” this year!
One More Song and Story... Well, we couldn’t fit this one into our Christmas Eve service. But it’s a good story, so we wanted to share it. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is one of the most misunderstood Christmas Carols of all. It sounds like God helping us to relax. To rest. To be happy because of Christmas. That’s a pretty good message, but not what the song writer intended. So what did he intend? What makes the song confusing? The meaning of words change. Let’s clarify definitions: When this carol was written, “rest” would be understood as “make”. “Ye” would be “you”. That’s an easy one. “Merry” wouldn’t be “happy”. Think of Robin Hood and his merry men. Robin Hood and his “happy” men? Really? No, “Merry” would be better defined as “Mighty”. Here’s what the carol is saying: “God make you mighty”. Aah, things are making more sense now. Think of the Apostle Peter. So fearful he denied knowing Jesus three times. But then later in Acts 2 he stood and preached the Gospel to the multitudes. Why the change? What happened to make Peter “mighty”? The Resurrection. With Jesus conquering death and sharing his victory with us when we trust in Him, life isn’t so scary anymore. That’s what faith does. It makes us bolder. Stronger. Mighty. And that victory began with Christmas. So may our Lord help you be more “merry” this Christmas. Who doesn't love a good Christmas story? Many of our most-loved Christmas carols have strange and fascinating histories. Ever notice the Biblical error in "The First Noel"? There's a reason for that. "Joy to the World" was created by two writers who never met. And "Silent Night" was written because the church organ needed repairs. Some stories are humorous, others poignant, and all are interesting. Invite a friend or relative and join us as we celebrate the birth of our Savior this Christmas Eve.
